How To Make Scented Soy Tealights

In this guide we will make tea light candles in clear polycarbonate cups. Wickpy tea light candle cups are reusable, provided they aren't damaged, and can also be recycled.

Using soy wax and pure essential oil blends for candle making, the time it takes to make our tea lights shouldn't take more than 45 minutes in total, though you experience more benefit from the process by taking taking a relaxed and mindful approach to your soy candle making.

By the end we will finish with scented aromatherapy tea lights that will last for up to 6 hours.

What you need

  • A stainless steel or heat resistant glass Jug (min 300 ml)
  • A saucepan filled with 2-3 inches of water
  • A thermometer, preferably digital
  • A tray or plate to work from

Method

Prep your area

  • Line your tray with paper if you're concerned for spills
  • Place your wicks, adhesive, straw, spoon and essential oil blend on your tray
  • Take a few deep breaths to relax and get present

Get some heat under the wax

Pour a few inches of water in to a saucepan. Add soy wax to the jug and place it gently into the water. Heat to a low simmer. Heat the wax to 85 degrees celsius while carrying on with the next step. Avoid heating the wax above 90 degrees celsius, and don't let the water boil off.

Prepare your tealight cups

Line up your tealight cups where you can comfortably pour into them.We find placing them close to the edge of the table works well.

Stir & sense

When the wax has reached 85 degrees celsius, add the full contents of the essential oil bottle to the wax and gently stir for two minutes. While stirring, change direction every few few turns.

Allow the wax to cool to 50 degrees celsius before pouring it into your tealight cups.

Pour the candle wax

Adhesives are included to secure tealight wicks to cups for additional stability. Attach them to the wick on one side and then stick each wick to the centre of the cups. With your tealight cups in position, pour into each one and fill.

Curing & caring for your new tealight candles

Soy tealight candles tend to set quite quickly.Once set, we recommend popping them into an airtight container or bag until they are 'cured'. Curing  is the process of the fragrance and wax infusing over time. We suggest curing your new tealights for one week to ten days.Store your candles away from sunlight in a moderately temperate room.Once cured, trim the wicks to 0.5 cm, light and enjoy. Each tealight burns for around 6 hours. Please please tag us in posts or stories of your experience and share photos of your candles with us @wickpycraft on Instagram.

Candle safety and care

Never leave candles unattended.Keep away from draughts and flammables.Trim the wick to 0.5 cm each time before lighting and each time you light your tealight candle.Burn for a maximum of 4 hours at a time.

What's next?

When your tealight candles are finished, please help us keep our planet tidy by reusing or recycling the cups.
To clean. Add a little extra water to the kettle for tea or run hot water from the tap. Pop the tealight cups into the sink, pour over hot water to melt away residual wax, wipe, and shake off excess water.
To refill with an Upcycling Kit, wash with soapy water and dry thoroughly. If you don't intend on refilling your tealight cups, please pop them in the recycling.
