Mentha piperita.

Peppermint (Mentha piperita) essential oil is a colourless to pale yellow oil with a fresh minty aroma and a faint peppery note.

Fun fact about peppermint.

In Greek mythology, a nymph Minthe became enamoured with Hades, lord of the underworld.

After attempting to seduce him, Hades' wife, enraged with jealousy trod her into the ground turning her into a useless plant.

Later, Hades turned the plant into a herb for all to enjoy until the end of time.

Peppermint oil - traditional uses

Peppermint is a cooling essential oil with antibacterial, anti-fungal, antiseptic and anti-viral properties.

Peppermint oil is regularly used as a flavouring in foods and drinks, and as a fragrance in soaps and cosmetics.

It is used to treat digestive issues, and its vapour is regularly used to treat cold and cough symptoms.

Aromachology of peppermint

The terms aroma-psychology and aromachology study the effect of scent on human behaviour and the relationship between feelings and emotions.

The term aromachology was first coined by the Sense of Smell Institute in 1989. Aromachologists study how aromas affect feelings including relaxation, exhilaration, sensuality, happiness, and well-being by stimulating the olfactory pathways in the brain, especially the limbic system.

Peppermint essential oil is awakening and can be useful when seeking clarity and stimulation.

If you're experiencing mental fatigue, overwork or sluggishness, a peppermint candle near your desk may be just the thing to get you into a productive state.

And, if nothing else, the fact that it smells nice means you'll be more likely to stick around and do the work.
