How To Calculate Wax For Candles
Calculate how much wax you need to make a candle using simple calculations.
All you need is an empty candle container, a kitchen scale, a pen and paper, water, and a calculator.
1. How to measure container volume
If the volume of your candle container is unknown, use the steps below to measure it using a kitchen scales and water.
If you know the container volume skip to the next step.
- Turn on the scale and set the unit to millilitres or grams.
- Place a container on the scale and use the Tare function to set the scale to 0.
- Fill the container to the top with water.
- The reading is the fill volume in millilitres or grams. If you get a reading of 100 g, your container holds 100 ml.
2. How to measure fill level
Fill level is how much of the container you want filled with candle wax.
Candle containers filled to the brim with wax don’t look aesthetically pleasing.
Fill the container with water to your preferred fill level or take 5-10% off the container volume to get a fill level for your candle that leaves some space at the top.
E.g. 10% off from a jar or container with a 100ml volume results in a 90ml fill level. 100 x 0.10 (10%) = 90.
3. How to calculate the wax
Multiply the fill level by 0.8 to get the amount of wax required for your candle.
For example, a 90ml fill level multiplied by 0.8 gives us 72 grams of wax required for the candle.
That’s it!
